Summary Collection includes correspondence, 1880-1923; field notes and diaries, 1871-1917; photographs, including his Colorado River voyage, 1889-1890, operations of the Hoskannini Mining Co., 1897-1900, and family photos; writings; maps; printed matter; and miscellaneous papers.
Correspondence and miscellaneous papers relate mainly to Stanton's research for a history of the Colorado River and the Grand Canyon. Those represented in these series by correspondence and reminiscences include contemporary explorers, geographers and authors interested in the Colorado River area.
Also included are a small collection of papers of Robert Livingston Stanton; correspondence, 1925-1959, of Anne Stanton Burchard documenting her efforts to publish her father's manuscript "The River and the Canyon"; letters from Anne to her parents while serving as a nurse in World War I; and a group of Burchard family papers, 1869-1941, including correspondence, photographs and printed matter mostly relating to Lewis Sayre Burchard and Samuel Dickinson Burchard.
Biography Robert Brewster Stanton (1846-1922) was a civil and mining engineer, who as chief engineer of the Denver, Colorado Canyon and Pacific Railroad Co. led a survey party through the Grand Canyon in 1889-1890.
In his work for the railroads and mining companies as a consulting engineer, Stanton's activities included assignments in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Cuba. His many projects included work for the Union Pacific Railway Co., Cincinnati Southern Railway Co., Atlantic & Pacific Railroad, Tripple Trip Mining Co., Hoskannini Mining Co., and others.
Stanton's daughter, Anne Stanton Burchard, was married to Lewis Sayre Burchard, a professor at City College. His father, Samuel Dickinson Burchard (1812-1891), was a prominent Presbyterian clergyman in New York City.
