Summary
Portraits of poet, playwright, and songwriter, Langston Hughes. Many individual portraits of Hughes, including Hughes at his typewriter, at Lincoln University, and artist's renderings. Individuals included in group portraits with Hughes are: Jean Blackwell Hutson, Milton Meltzer with a copy of their book, Jessie Fauset, Sophie Arnall Jacobs, Arna Bontemps, James Emanuel, Jay Wright, Sam Allen, Lucy Smith, Calvin Hernton, James Vaughan, David Henderson, Ray Patterson, Robert Abrams, Zora Neale Hurston and Joseph Nwanne. Notable among the group portraits is Hughes posing with Charles S. Johnson, E. Franklin Frazier, Rudolph Fisher and Hubert T. Delany at a party for Hughes held at the 580 St. Nicholas Ave., Harlem, home of Regina Andrews and Ethel Ray Nance in 1924. Other images depict Hughes signing copies of his books; talking with students; with a poster of "Black Nativity"; in group portraits with cast members from the stage productions "Just A Little Simple" (1950) and "The Barrier" (1950), which were based on his work; with cast and crew from Harry Belafonte's 1966 television special "The Strollin' Twenties," which Hughes wrote; and receiving an award. There is also a view of an exhibit of his books willed to the Schomburg. Full, half and quarter length views are included.
