Biography
Born in Portsmouth, Virginia, Ruth Inge Hardison (1904-2016) was a sculptor, photographer, actress and poet known for her series of cast iron busts of "Negro Giants in History," begun in 1963, and her sculptures of ordinary people, "Our Folks," launched in 1984. Hardison was a founding member of the Black Academy of Arts and Letters, an African-American cultural organization founded in 1969 for the preservation and promotion of Black culture. The organization dissolved circa 1973.
