Description
<53> posters : col. and b&w.
Summary
Posters about Martin Luther King, Jr., manufactured between 1968-1989. Several posters are commemorative and didactic. The posters document important events in the civil rights movement such as, the first day of bus desegregation in Alabama, the March on Washington, the rally after the assassination attempt against James Meredith, King's funeral, and historical events of that era as they relate to MLK. Also documented are the opponents of MLK and the civil rights movement including, the Ku Klux Klan, and other white supremacist groups. There are pictorial and written biographical composites on some posters of MLK's family, education, ministry, philosophy and civil rights activity. Included also are three posters featuring Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, two with Coretta Scott king, one with MLK and Stevie Wonder, Four Kingfest posters and a poster announcing a requiem for MLK at Avery Fischer Hall. A large amount of the poster collection are images of MLK that capture his various expressions; some are formal others are candid. There is also a published series of poster reproductions of MLK by Robert Sengstake. Two posters are done by artist Lois Mailou Jones.
