Summary
  • Posters and handbills manufactured or hand written, between 1940 and 1991, announcing social and cultural affairs, located primarily in New York City. Most events occured in the 1970's and 80's and celebrate the culture of people of African descent. Posters announce festivals, fashion shows, cultural dances, parades, beauty pagents, building dedications, commemorative events, etc. sponsored by cultural associations, community centers, neighborhood organizations, economic associations and other groups. Often they are fundraisers for organizations. They usually offer different forms of entertainment: dance, music, lectures, film showings, exhibits, etc. all during the course of one festival or event. The collection does not include Black History Month celebrations.
  • Organizations sponsoring events include (but are not limited to) the Black Merchants Association, the Jamaica (Queens) Art Center, the Harlem Cultural Council, the National Conference of Artists, Studio Watts and the Committee for the Negro in the Arts. Festivals include Harlem Week, the National Black Arts Festival (Atlanta, Georgia), Chalk-In (Studio Watts, California), the Virgin Islands Festival (N.Y.), Kwanza celebrations, Art Against Apartheid festivals, the Negro World's Fair (Detroit, 1940), the 1st World Festival of the Negro Arts and the Ebony Fashion Fair.
