  • Henry Baldwin (1832-1905) was a businessman in New York City and New Haven, Connecticut. He was elected to the position of "Custodian of American History" of the National Council of Patriotic Organizations and was charged with creating a "Library Americana". The library's mission was to collect and verify facts relating to American history and genealogy.
  • William Osborne McDowell (1848-1927) was a businessman in Newark, New Jersey. His interest in patriotic causes led him to create and raise funds for various committees, campaigns and symbolic initiatives. He involved Baldwin in many of these organizations and became a trustee of the Library Americana.
