Biography (note)
  • Arthur Upham Pope (1881-1969) was an American authority on Persian art and antiquities. During the 1920s and 1930s, he organized international exhibitions of Persian art; advised museums, dealers and purchasers of Iranian art objects; edited the multi-volume Survey of Persian Art (published in 1938); and conducted archaeological expeditions to Persia (later Iran) and photographic surveys of Persian architecture. In 1930 he founded the American Institute for Persian Art and Archaeology which became the Asia Institute in 1947 after several name changes. Pope was director of the Institute and chancellor of the School for Iranian Studies until his retirement in 1953. He also wrote and lectured and was active with various political groups during the Spanish Civil War and World War II.

Biography
Arthur Upham Pope (1881-1969) was an American authority on Persian art and antiquities. During the 1920s and 1930s, he organized international exhibitions of Persian art; advised museums, dealers and purchasers of Iranian art objects; edited the multi-volume Survey of Persian Art (published in 1938); and conducted archaeological expeditions to Persia (later Iran) and photographic surveys of Persian architecture. In 1930 he founded the American Institute for Persian Art and Archaeology which became the Asia Institute in 1947 after several name changes. Pope was director of the Institute and chancellor of the School for Iranian Studies until his retirement in 1953.
