Summary
  • Records document the varied activities of the National Council of Women, chiefly its executive committee meetings, annual and biennial meetings, conferences, seminars, and other events, and the work of its ad hoc and standing committees, especially the International Hospitality Committee. Collection consists mainly of letters to and from executive committee members and standing committee chairmen; programs, agendas, minutes, and transcripts of meetings and conferences; printed matter, including NCW's newsletters and annual reports; audio tapes; and photographs.
  • In Activities files, 1933-1970, materials such as correspondence, programs, brochures, transcripts, speeches and press relaeases relate to the conferences, lectures, workshops, and NCW sponsored events that were not held as part of the annual and biennial meetings. Files of other organizations, 1950-1970, include materials pertaining to NCW's interaction with government agencies, academic institutions, and non-profit groups, both NCW members and non-members. Subject files, 1948-1971, contain items relating to a wide range of social issues and geographic areas. Materials in non-NCW files, 1896-1974, chiefly concern the activities of Grace Thompson Seton in the 1930s and Rose Parsons in the 1940s and 1950s. Collection also includes audio-visual materials (over 70 audio tapes and more than 200 photographs), 1888-1969, documenting various NCW activities.

  • The National Council of Women of the United States (NCW) is an organization comprised of women's voluntary organizations with a common interest in the social, educational, and political rights of women. Its primary purpose is to act as a clearing-house or information bureau for its members in order to broaden awareness of each other's activities and to increase cooperation and reduce duplication of efforts among them. Along with its affiliate organization, the International Council of Women, the NCW was founded in Washington, D.C. in March 1888.

Biography
The National Council of Women of the United States (NCW) is an organization comprised of women's voluntary organizations with a common interest in the social, educational, and political rights of women. Its primary purpose is to act as a clearing-house or information bureau for its members in order to broaden awareness of each other's activities and to increase cooperation and reduce duplication of efforts among them. Along with its affiliate organization, the International Council of Women, the NCW was founded in Washington, D.C. in March 1888.
