- "When a book is put into the hands of young persons, in the form of a memoir or narrative, it is common to hear them ask, 'Is it true?' In reply to this interrogation respecting the following little historical sketch, we say, it is true ... the avails of the copy-right will be devoted to the benefit of schools in Africa"--Preface, p. i-iii, signed, "a member of the Second Baptist Church in Boston," and dated Boston, May, 1832.

- The Schomburg Center Manuscripts, Archives & Rare Book Division has two copies of this item. G.K. Hall's entry for these books includes a "March 21, 1944" cataloging date, which indicated that these books are part of some of the items re-cataloged during Lawrence Reddick's period. Copy 1 (accession no. G93528) is a gift, probably added to the Schomburg collection when Catherine A. Latimer was the collection librarian. The book bears two NYPL bookplates of Arthur A. Schomburg Negro Collection on pages [2] & [3] of the cover, NYPL's perforated stamp, and early processing marking of the original collection. The book is imperfect: treated, water stained, library-bound in navy cloth over boards and a gilt spine, and includes a "Jan. 29, 1948" re-bounding date ink stamp on page [3] of the cover.Copy 2 in Sc Rare 326.92-M (accession no. B499081) inscribed in ink on the title page, after the author's statement: "Mary Webb who died May 24, 1861, at Boston in the 93d year of her age." This copy is part of the original collection purchased from Arthur A. Schomburg in 1926. This copy also bears an NYPL bookplate of Arthur A. Schomburg Negro Collection on pages [2] of the cover, NYPL's perforated stamp, and early processing marking of the original collection. The book is imperfect: treated, loose preliminary page, library-bound in red cloth over boards and a gilt spine, and bears a "Jan. 19, 1928" bounding date ink stamp on page [3] of the cover.
