- Includes Preface to the second Dublin edition, Preface to the first American edition signed at end by Wm. Lloyd Garrison, Letter from Wendell Phillips, Esq., Postscript, Appendix, Critical notices, "American slavery. Report of a public meeting held at Finsbury Chapel, Moorfields, to receive Frederick Douglass ... May 22, 1846" (p. [133]-166), and "To the friends of the slave" (p. [167]-170).
- This Narrative, the autobiography of Frederick Douglass, was expanded in 1855 under the title My bondage and my freedom. In 1881, it was further extended as the Life and times of Frederick Douglass, and in 1893 completed and revised under the same title.
