Collection consists of correspondence, financial records, Blakely's personal papers, and Sousa printed ephemera. Correspondence relates to Blakely's management of the Theodore Thomas and Eduard Strauss orchestras and the P.S. Gilmore and John Philip Sousa bands. Blakely's primary concern was the acquisition, organization and management of the Sousa band. Materials include financial papers and account books of the Blakely Syndicate; records of the Blakely Printing Company; personal papers, letters and bills of David Blakely; and John Philip Sousa printed ephemera as well as calling cards, concert programs, and opera and theatre house seating plans from the period. |

| Biography |
David Blakely (1834-1896) was a journalist and businessman whose interest in music led to his career as manager of the Gilmore and Sousa bands of the 1880s and 1890s. As founder of the Blakely Syndicate he oversaw a network of interrelated operations which included the Blakely Printing Company as well as management of various concert bands and orchestras. |
