Correspondence, 1840-1851, consists primarily of letters to Bennett from readers of the Herald concerning politics, crime and news events in New York and other states in the U.S. Also included is the diary he kept during a journey through New York State from June to August of 1831. |

James Gordon Bennett (1795-1872) was the founder and editor of the New York Herald. After working as a teacher and lecturer, he founded the Herald in 1835. |
