Approx. 6,320 photographic prints : silver gelatin, b&w; 24 x 30 cm. or smaller.
Summary
  • Views of Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, New York and Asia. The bulk of the collection consists of views of France: landscape and village views, chateaus, castles, villas, churches, peasant and farm life, peasant costume, fishermen, particularly in Brittany, markets, women doing laundry in the open air, country industries such as sabot making, lace making, baskets, textiles, ceramic, porcelain production in Sevres and Limoges; and wine culture. Resorts and spas in Cannes, Monte Carlo, Nice, Granville, Royat and Vichy are represented. Views in Paris include the flea markets and other markets, night clubs and cafes, salons and stores, street scenes, the Sorbonne, the Louvre and the French Colonial Exposition and other exhibits. Also significant are views of World War II, including mostly views of the impact of the war on civilians and children: views of refugees, internment camps, starving children, hospitals, war relief by the Red Cross, food rationing, etc. Also includes views of prisoners of war, Britain during the Blitz, and views in Sweden and Norway. Finland is another area of concentration, and views include architecture, farming, saunas, industry and the Helsinki airport before the war, preparations for the 1940 Olympics[?], views of the Russo-Finnish War including troop training and deployment, bomb damage, Russian P.O.W.'s.
  • Other countries well represented include Belgium, Germany, Holland, and the North African region, including Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia. Modern architecture is represented in Germany, Holland and France, and includes designs by Andre Lurcat, Robert Mallet-Stevens and Gabriel Guevrekian. Art and design makes up the rest of the collection, including art reproduction of painting, and sculpture; design, including costume, furniture, interiors, luggage and other accessories, bookbinding, tapestries and textiles, and gardens. Also included are portraits of artists, and designers, often pictured with their work, writers, politicians, other personalities, among these are Sibelius, Jean Lurçat, and Lady Astor and guests at her home. Also included is a portrait of Miss Bonney in a helmet and holding her Rolleiflex.

  • Thérèse Bonney, 1897-1978, was born in N.Y., raised and educated in California, at Harvard, Columbia, and the Sorbonne. The author of several books, she ran a photo agency in Paris beginning in the 1920s. She took up photography herself in the 1930s, photographing the Vatican, the Russo-Finnish War, and civilians during World War II, made while working as a free-lance journalist, and through a grant by the Carnegie Corporation.
