- Biography
Edward C. Taintor (1842-1878) was an American who served in the Chinese Customs Service. He arrived in China in 1865 and was stationed first in Peking and later in several port cities. After recovering in the U.S. from a disease that left him deaf, he returned to China where he was put in charge of the Customs Service's Dept. of Statistics. In addition to his official duties, Taintor pursued classical studies, Chinese language and literature, and studies for the Royal Geographical Society of England. Because of his health he had to go back to the U.S. in 1875 and committed suicide in 1878.
