Summary Collection of commonplace books consists of volumes containing entries written by the owners of the books, their friends, families, and acquaintances. Collected by young American women and one man in the 19th century, entries consist chiefly of quotations, poems, drawings, or autographs. Most entries are signed and dated and the place is often noted. Some books contain insertions, such as dried flowers, drawings or letters.
