| Summary |
Collection consists of Agnew's personal and political papers. Letterbook, 1893-1904, and correspondence through 1901 are almost entirely of a personal and business nature. From 1902 through 1910 the correspondence is primarily political in nature. Includes letters from constituents, associates and others interested in the outcome of bills before the New York State Legislature. Bulk of letters for 1908-1910 pertains to the gambling issue. The few letters after 1913 are mostly personal or concern the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church. Two boxes relating to politics and business contain news clippings, circulars, petitions, legislative bills, speeches, reports, and some correspondence, while the box on racetrack gambling has transcriptions of legislative hearings and debates. Also, three scrapbooks relating to family interests, the National Guard, and New York State and national politics. |

| Biography |
George Bliss Agnew (1868-1941) was a New York City businessman and politician. He entered politics in 1895 with his appointment as aide-de-camp to New York governor Levi P. Morton. In 1901 Agnew was elected a Republican member of the New York State Assembly and then served two terms in the New York State Senate, 1906-1910. As a legislator, he was best known for co-sponsoring the Agnew-Hart Act which prohibited racetrack gambling in New York. He was also active in the New York National Guard, 1896-1911, and the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church. |
