Alvin Ailey speaks with Walter Terry about Hugh Masekela and Masekela's music; his new work Masekela language, in particular the meaning of the word "language;" the themes of the dance including its intended evocations of Katherine Dunham and Chicago; more on Masekela's music; the folk dancing he saw performed in cabarets in Uganda; his 1967 African tour and its influence on his choreography; Ruth Beckford; black dance in America including how he characterizes his own work; more on Masekela language; Judith Jamison; an anecdote about performing for Jomo Kenyatta in Kenya.
