Summary
  • Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 52 minutes). An unidentified person speaks about the charitable fund-raising aspect of the lecture and introduces James Kennedy [The Reverend James William Kennedy]; Kennedy speaks about the musical comedy Oklahoma, in particular the choreography, and introduces Agnes de Mille; De Mille introduces her topic, patronage in the theater; her definition of patronage; Billy Rose and her attempt to persuade him to give money to American Ballet Theatre [at approximately 11:47 minutes, the volume of the recording becomes too low for the speaker to be intelligible].
  • Streaming audio file 2 (approximately 18 minutes). Agnes de Mille continues to speak about patronage of the theater in the United States. Volume is low with the result that her words are difficult to understand until approximately 11:00 minutes at which point a question and answer period begins. Topics discussed in the question and answer period include government subsidies, American Ballet Theatre, and the lack of legal protection for choreography.
