Summary
Streaming audio file (approximately 30 minutes). Walter Terry introduces Niels Kehlet of the Royal Danish Ballet [Kongelige Danske ballet]. Niels Kehlet speaks with Terry about the mechanics of jumping; the use of jumps to express character, as for example in his roles as the Magician in [Birgit Cullberg's] Moon reindeer, as a bandit in [Roland Petit's] Carmen, and as the jester in Swan lake; the difference between the [Auguste] Bournonville and [George] Balanchine styles of jumping; his own favorite roles including that of Franz in the ballet Coppélia and of Gennaro in Bournonville's Napoli; the seemingly magical costume change in Napoli; favorite roles in abstract ballets such as Balanchine's Symphony in C and Harald Landers' Etudes; his theatrical training, at the Royal Danish Ballet school; teaching. [The final approximate six minutes of the streaming file contain an unrelated recording: an excerpt of an interview with Ruth St. Denis.]

Note
  • Interview with Niels Kehlet conducted by Walter Terry, as host, for broadcast on January 2, 1965, by radio station WNYC, New York, on its series Invitation to dance. The final approximate six minutes of the recording include an (unrelated) excerpt of an interview with Ruth St. Denis.
  • The sound quality of the Niels Kehlet interview is very good. The Ruth St. Denis interview excerpt is marred by extraneous noise (a recording that is of much lower volume and unintelligible due to its speed). However, the voice of St. Denis and her interviewer are clear and easy to understand.
  • The processing and cataloging of this recording was made possible in part by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. The support of the National Endowment for the Arts is also gratefully acknowledged.
