  • Disc 1, July 30, 1974 (44 min.). Marie Rambert speaks with John Gruen about Lincoln Kirstein; her daily activities and interests; her very early dance training; witnessing a protest by revolutionaries in Warsaw; her life as a student in Paris; seeing Isadora Duncan dance for the first time; taking dance and other classes including acrobatics, in the south of France; continuing her dance education in Paris including an anecdote about Raymond Duncan; giving private recitals to support herself; studying with [Émile] Jaques-Dalcroze [John Gruen describes Rambert's living room, in particular the art work and Rambert's physical appearance]; Rambert continues to speak about studying with Jaques-Dalcroze; meeting Nijinsky and Serge Diaghilev and being engaged to teach the Dalcroze method to the Ballets russes [ends abruptly but continues on disc 2].
  • Disc 2, July 30, 1974 (ca. 44 min.). Marie Rambert continues to speak to John Gruen about her time with the Ballets russes, in particular working with Waslaw Nijinsky; his relatively ordinary appearance as contrasted with his appearance on stage; their friendship; briefly, Kyra Nijinsky; more on Nijinsky, including an anecdote about his quarreling with Stravinsky at a rehearsal; leaving Ballets russes when her contract was not renewed; her activities in London during World War I; forming her own ballet school; Frederick Ashton, including as a student; his first choreography [ca. 1 min. into track 8 the interview is halted to allow Rambert to rest; interview resumes at ca. 1:45 min., but sound quality is poor until ca. 4:00]; briefly, Lydia Lopokova; Beryl Grey.

Marie Rambert speaks with John Gruen about forming her own company [Ballet Rambert]; Antony Tudor, as a choreographer including his Lilac garden [Jardin aux lilas] and his Dark elegies; Tudor as a dancer; how Tudor came to be her student; more on her friendship with her students including Ashton; Andrée Howard including her [and Susan Salaman's] work Mermaid; Ninette de Valois; Tamara Karsavina in particular the beauty of her dancing; Lydia Lopokova and her humorous remarks; Olga Spessivtzeva and her classical perfection; her very brief meetings with Anna Pavlova; Ballet Rambert [the Rambert Dance Company as of 1987] and how it came by its avant-garde character; her husband [Ashley Duke] and her children including their relationship to her work.

  • Sound quality is fair overall. At times Marie Rambert's voice difficult to understand. Also, there is an extraneous hiss due to distortion in the original as well as occasional short gaps.
