John Gruen, as host, introduces his guests Patricia McBride and Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux [also spelled "Bonnefous"]; McBride speaks about George Balanchine's new work The steadfast tin soldier; Bonnefoux speaks about his role in the Phlegmatic variation in Balanchine's Four temperaments; his reasons for leaving the Paris Opera Ballet for the New York City Ballet; McBride speaks about how fulfilling it is as a dancer to work with Balanchine and Jerome Robbins; the relatively few major roles for a ballerina at American Ballet Theatre as compared with the many roles at New York City Ballet; Bonnefoux speaks about why it is possible to dance as a guest artist in the classic ballets like Giselle but difficult to do so in Balanchine's works [a recording of the music, by Paul Hindemith, used for the Phelgmatic variation in Four temperaments, is played followed by a commercial announcement]; McBride and Bonnefoux speak (briefly) about their wedding and marriage; (briefly) Robbins' ballet Dybbuk; working with Balanchine compared with working with Robbins [Gruen explains some of the critical remarks he has made in the past about New York City Ballet following which a recording of an excerpt of the music, by Georges Bizet, used for the ballet Jeux d'enfants, is played]; McBride speaks about the qualities Balanchine seeks in his female dancers including in particular musicality; Bonnefoux and McBride speak about Balanchine and male dancers; Bonnefoux speaks about becoming a dancer [announcements].
