Summary
Streaming audio file (approximately 30 minutes). [Music and announcements.] P.W. Manchester and Carolyn Watts discuss the original and unsuccessful first production of the ballet Swan lake in 1877 including the difficulty dancers of that time had performing to [Peter Illich] Tchaikovsky's music; Marius Petipa's and Lev Ivanov's revised version of 1895, which included changes in the music [a recording of an excerpt of the music used in Act III of Swan lake is played]; Manchester and Watts speak about the music just heard; the origin of Odile's wearing of a black tutu and of the term "the black swan"; the tradition of the same dancer performing Odette and Odile; the 32 fouettés; changes to the ballet over the years including the addition of a jester [a recording of music by Tchaikovsky used for the dance of the four little swans is played]; Act II as the act that has seen the fewest changes; its romantic character; the Sadler's Wells Ballet and American Ballet Theatre productions and how they differ from the current Russian version [music and announcements].
