Summary
Streaming file (approximately 45 minutes). Erik Bruhn speaks with John Gruen about his taking a leave of absence from the Royal Danish Ballet [Kongelige Danske Ballet] to dance with the Metropolitan Ballet; the circumstances of his joining Ballet Theatre [later American Ballet Theatre] including his being discovered in effect by Hans Beck and Blevins Davis; his relationship with Davis; his first season with Ballet Theatre and its problems including his injured foot; returning as a soloist, at Lucia Chase's invitation; Harald Lander, in particular the incident that caused Lander to leave Denmark and the effect of the incident on Bruhn; leaving the Royal Danish Ballet in 1954 including an anecdote about a farewell performance and King Frederick IX; his continuing to dance for the Royal Danish Ballet as a guest artist; re-joining Ballet Theatre [ends abruptly].
