Violette Verdy speaks with Walter Terry about her position as artistic director of the Opéra de Paris ballet including the company's repertoire; planning the company's upcoming programs; problems with the company; the need for greater corporate support for the dancers; her goal of what she calls relative autonomy for the company; her relationship with [Rolf] LIebermann; the relationship of the ballet company with the opera company; the circumstances leading to her appointment as artistic director; her training including her brief period as a student at the Opéra de Paris ballet; Claude Bessy; the challenges Verdy faces; the relationship of the government with the opera company including Jacques Chirac's role in preventing its closure by Valéry Giscard d'Estaing.
