- Following John Gruen's introductory remarks, Gian Carlo Menotti speaks about his experience collaborating with Martha Graham on her work Errand into the maze; a performance anecdote about Errand into the maze; his composition Sebastian, which was commissioned by the Marquis de Cuevas [for his company Ballet International du Marquis de Cuevas], including anecdotes about working with the choreographer Edward Caton; a subsequent production of this ballet in Paris; other choreographers' use of this music including Agnes de Mille; Gruen and Menotti discuss Menotti's role in bringing numerous choreographers and dance companies to perform at the Spoleto festival [Festival of two worlds]; briefly, Rudolf Nureyev, Margot Fonteyn and the ballet Raymonda; Menotti speaks about Balanchine's choreographing of a dance for Menotti's opera Amahl and the night visitors; his collaboration with Antony Tudor on a dance to be based on Marcel Proust's work, including an anecdote about meeting a less than respectable former friend of Proust; the reason the work was never completed; his collaboration with Alwin Nikolais on Menotti's opera Help, help, the Globolinks!; why he found it difficult to be friends, as compared to a collaborator of, Jerome Robbins.

- Interview with Gian-Carlo Menotti conducted by John Gruen at Menotti's home in Gifford, Scotland on Aug. 16, 1974 for the New York Public Library's Oral History Project. An internal reference suggests that the final eight minutes of the recording may have been made a few days later in a separate session.
- Sound quality is fair; the speakers' voices are soft but easily intelligible. There is continuous tape hiss as well as occasional extraneous noises and short gaps.
