Betty Lynd Thompson, staff member at Oregon State University from 1927-1971, speaks with Pearl Atkinson about the beginnings of her career as a dance teacher including her teacher Margaret [Newell] D'Houbler; the concept of modern dance, then known as "natural dance," at the time; her training, with Martha Graham and Hanya Holm, and at Bennington College; bringing Martha Graham to Oregon in 1940 including the local response as well as Thompson's arranging of a performance for children; her dance classes at Oregon State College; her touring company; her book entitled: Fundamentals of rhythm and dance, with an analysis of the rhythmic approach in teaching dance skills (1933); the teaching manual she created based on her course syllabuses; Miriam Lidster.
