Streaming audio file (approximately 17 minutes). Agnes de Mille reminisces about the opening night of Ballet Theatre (now American Ballet Theatre), in 1940; De Mille reads a letter from President Gerald Ford and speaks about Lucia Chase's enormous contribution to ballet in the United States; Angier Biddle Duke, New York City Commissioner of Civic and Public Affairs, on behalf of the City of New York, awards the Handel Medallion to Lucia Chase and Oliver Smith; Chase accepts the award and expresses her gratitude to Oliver Smith and the dancers and staff of American Ballet Theatre [music and applause].
