- Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 32 minutes). [Begins abruptly.] Helen Priest Rogers speaks with Teresa E. Sekora about her first exposure to dance; attending the Bennington School of the Dance, in 1934; John Martin as the stimulus for her interest in dance notation; her time at New College Columbia [New College for the Education of Teachers; created under Teachers College at Columbia University; closed in 1939]; Martha Graham's advising her to learn notation; studying Labonotation with Albrecht Knust in Germany; revising the system to conform better with dance technique in the United States; teaching dance after her return from Germany; the 1938 season at the Bennington School of the Dance including her participation in Martha Graham's workshop company; becoming interested in photography and filming dance at Bennington School of the Dance; attending the Bennington School of the Dance at Mills College, in 1939; studying and performing with Graham; meeting Ann Hutchinson, Janey Price, and Eve Gentry and developing a common style of notation; forming the Dance Notation Bureau at the suggestion of John Martin [ends abruptly but continues on streaming file 2].
