  • Scene three, the tarantella finale, from Pasquale Borri's ballet-pantomime L'étoile de Messine, first performed at the Paris Opéra, Nov. 20, 1861.
  • Outdoor setting: a clearing in a wooded area by the bay of Naples, boats, houses in the distance. Several principals of the Paris Opéra, including Louis Mérante, dance the tarantella at center. They all hold tambourines. Members of the corps de ballet watch from extreme left and right.
