- Etching, colored, image, including frame-border; 24.7 x 35.2 cm.
- Donor/Sponsor
- Gift of Lillian Moore.
- Note
- Lower right: G. C'k [i.e., George Cruikshank]. A satirical print prompted by Mercandotti's sudden abandoning of her stage career in order to marry her wealthy suitor Hughes Ball.
- Mountainous setting. Mercandotti, at center, dances for Hughes Ball. She is on left pointe, her right leg extended to front. She holds the end of a lasso, labeled "matrimonial noose," which is around Ball. He is sitting on a sack, with two large bags of money between his legs. Lord Fife, Mercandotti's patron and, purportedly, her father, sits on a trunk and plays a fife. Cf. Ballet [London], May 1948, vol. 5, no. 5, p. 33. Reproduction.
