- French dancing master, wearing powdered wig with projecting side curls, coat with skirt cut away towards back, knee breeches, buckled shoes; he is standing at an angle, his weight on one foot, as he plays a pochette. His pupil, a young girl of about eight years of age, delicately holds her skirt with both hands as she imitates his stance.
- Four lines below, beginning: "Do I point the toe right, Monsieur?" The teacher's response is in broken English.
