Details

Description
Etching; line border: 20.8 x 28.2 cm.
Donor/Sponsor
Gift of Lillian Moore.
Note
  • Unsigned etching, possibly by Valerio Spada, from Giovanni Moniglia's libretto Ercole in Tebe, an opera offered as part of the festivities commemorating the marriage of Cosimo III de' Medici and Margaret Louise, Princess of Orleans.
  • An outdoor setting, a sea in background, large rocky formations at left and right. Upper left, a celestial chariot drawn by two peacocks and propelled by the exhalation of cherubs. Background center, eight simian-like figures leap about. One executes what appears to be an entrechat. Five courtiers at left and right observe their movements.
  • Cf. Spencer Collection Ital. 1661, Moniglia, Giovanni Andrea, for a copy of the complete libretto, with thirteen etchings of scenes from the opera, including this plate, which appears between pp. 36 and 37.
