- CONTENTS: Evolution of Afro-Cuban music in the United States. Exploration of various Latin dance crazes, including the tango (derived from the Cuban habañera), conga, mambo, and cha-cha-cha. Film clips of and interviews with individuals who popularized Latin music, among them Don Aspiazu, Xavier Cugat, and Desi Arnaz (seen in his youth and with Lucille Ball). Discussion of the blending of jazz and Latin music by Machito, Mario Bauza, Dizzy Gillespie (who recalls his collaboration with musician Chano Pozo), Cal Tjader, and the Cuban musical group Irakere. The influence of Afro-Cuban music on rock 'n' roll is demonstrated through brief clips of The Diamonds, Johnny Otis, Elvis Presley, and Bo Diddley. Salsa music, invented by Arsenio Rodríguez, is performed by Celia Cruz and Conjunto Libre. The program concludes with a performance by and interview with Ruben Blades, whose music is a vehicle for political statements. Among the many dancers and dancer-actors who appear in the course of the program are Irene and Vernon Castle, Charlie Chaplin, Rudolph Valentino, Carmen Miranda (in "The lady in the tutti-frutti hat" from Busby Berkeley's The gang's all here), Donald Duck, and Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth (in a brief glimpse of You were never lovelier).
