Summary
Documentary of a Crow (Apsaalooka) sundance, recorded in the Wolf Mountains of Montana in July 1990. The narrator, Lloyd (Mickey) Old Coyote, a Native American, discusses the philosophical basis of the sundance and various aspects of present-day Native American culture. The sundance in this recording, which combines Shoshone and Crow traditions, is shown from its beginnings (the cutting of the center pole and construction of the lodge) through the various ceremonies that comprise it (firelighting, sunrise ceremonial, painting of the dancers, making offerings and prayers, etc.).
