Summary
Survey of ritual and religious dance in the Asian countries of India, Thailand, Java, Bali, China, and Japan. The role of dance in Buddhism, Tantric Buddhism, Hinduism, and Shintoism is explored, as are dances associated with water, earth, and fire rituals. The Ramayana, the Hindu epic, is examined as a source of inspiration for the Javanese wayang wong and the Balinese kecak. Weapon dances in China and Japan are represented, as are dances emphasizing hand gestures, such as the Balinese jauk. In surveying the transmission of traditions, the program presents a panorama of dance classes and rehearsals in Java, Bali, and Japan.
