32 photographic prints : silver gelatin, b&w; 5 x 7 in. or smaller, on 8 x 10 in. mounts.
Summary
Albanian, Armenian, Finnish, German, Italian, Jewish, Lithuanian, Russian, Slavic, Slovak, and Syrian immigrants at Ellis Island, with luggage, eating, sleeping, preparing for railroad trips, doing handwork, playing and dancing. Collection also includes portraits of individuals and groups.

  • Selected, printed, organized and prepared in 1939 for the Russell Sage Foundation Library, New York City. Photographs mounted on grey board with typed labels bearing image number, title and caption, date, and credit line "Photo-study by Lewis W. Hine." Stamped verso with Russell Sage Foundation Library stamps.
  • Hine's work photographing immigrants is described by him in six page typescript text bound in a pamphlet folder accompanying the collection.
