Collection consists of subject index to articles in the New York Herald from 1835 to 1918. Entries consist of a brief description of the article, followed by a citation. Index is written in longhand in small ledger books from 1835 to 1908; from 1908 to 1918, index was typed and the pages subsequently bound. Also includes typewritten copy of handwritten ledger index from letters A to Brady.
Biography
The New York Herald was first published in 1835 in New York City and continued publication until 1920 when it was merged with the New York Tribune. The index to articles in the newspaper was begun in 1860 by Robert Bligh, one of the first newspaper librarians.
