Summary
Third part of a Malaysian folk theater and dance ritual or performance of several hours' duration, probably recorded during Manuel Alum's visit to Malaysia in 1990. The performance also appears on *MGZIC 9-4831 and 9-4832, also titled Dewa Pecil, Bahgian. In the first of these two cassettes, the performance, which began at night, is seen continuing through daybreak into morning. The ensuing nighttime scenes may show the performance's continuation into a second night. Some sections of this performance may be recognized in theatricalized form in Alum's choreographic work Made in Malaysia/a shamanic journey, first presented at the Asia Society, New York, in June 1991. Among them are the Main puteri, an exorcism ritual performed by a male or female shaman and a rebab player who acts as interrogator, and the Mak yong, a dance-drama in which women play all the roles except those of clowns.
