Summary
Documentation of part of a three-week trip to the interior of Guinea, made by Kemoko Sano and Hamidou Bagoura, respectively choreographer and technical director of Les Ballets Africains of the Republic of Guinea, in search of promising musicians and dancers who might be recruited for the company, and source material for new works. At each site they visited, they were received by local authorities, and watched local troupes. They are often glimpsed observing, recording, and participating in the performances.

  • Reel 1 (ca. 52 min.). Recorded on January 7 and 8, 1991, in the prefecture of Nzérékoré and the sub-prefecture of Gouecke. As the villagers look on, a men's ensemble sings and plays various instruments, primarily drums. Men and women, some of them elderly, take turns dancing. Kemoko Sano appears on-camera in a red-and-white warm-up suit. After ca. 41 min. of music and dancing, the group moves in procession through the village, pausing at a circle of chairs made of rocks, and at the home of the oldest woman in the village.
  • Reel 2 (ca. 47 min.). Recorded on January 9, 1991, in the prefecture of Nzérékoré. Performance by a men's ensemble, including wind instruments, before an audience of dignitaries and villagers. Dancers, mainly women, take turns performing. Kemoko Sano dances in black clothes and beret -- Performance by a women's ensemble, which dances and plays percussion instruments. Towards the end of the tape, the adults are joined by two young girls, who take turns dancing.
