Sophie Maslow speaks with Agnes de Mille about her time at the Neighborhood Playhouse where she first met Martha Graham and first saw her perform, in Irene Lewisohn's dance set to [Ernst] Bloch's symphony Israel; studying with Graham and Louis Horst at Graham's studio; earning her living with odd jobs and teaching; Graham as a teacher including her evident talent; [Agnes de Mille speaks about her relationship with Graham during this period]; Maslow speaks about Graham's apparent self-confidence in class and rehearsals; Graham's creative process; her work Deaths and entrances including her and Jane [Dudley's] contribution to their roles; Graham's American document; the difficulty of reconstructing Graham's early works; the Cuba tour, in 1941; working with Louis Horst [ends abruptly but continues on streaming file 2].
