Cassette 1. Ms. Markova discusses first meeting George Balanchine in 1924; Serge Diaghilev's desire to have her dance at age ten in Aurora's wedding; her early influences; Balanchine and Bronislava Nijinska; joining Diaghilev's company at age 14; the differences in classes taught by Astaf'eva Serafima, Nikolaĭ Legat, and Enrico Cecchetti; being coached in Swan lake by Mathilde Kchessinska; Balanchine re-choreographing the mime scene in Swan lake's act 2; Pierina Legnani's White act solo; dancing in Balanchine's L'enfant et les sortilèges and Rossignol [The song of the nightingale], and the difficulty of Stravinsky's music for the latter; dancing in the Monte Carlo opera ballet for Balanchine; Balanchine's changes in Nijinska's Aurora's wedding; Balanchine's early acrobatic choreography; and performing in Balanchine's La chatte.
