[A] "thematic" sound system was...created for Variations VII (1966), one of a series of works presented in New York as collaborations between artists and engineers. In this case Cage's inspiration was electronic technology's ability to make the unaudible audible. The sound system was designed with the limitation that only sounds that arose during the performance were to be used -- in other words, the performers would not make any actions to generate sounds deliberately, but rather would use technological means to discover sounds in the air "as through with a net."...In this case the sound sources included: contact mikes attached to the performance platform; four assistants whose activities of heart, brain, lung, and stomach were detected and amplified; geiger counters; and various devices for receiving electromagnetic communication transmissions, such as twenty radios, two televisions, and fifteen telephones. The performers moved among all this equipment, amplifying, mixing, and routing the results to seventeen different speakers. (The Music of John Cage / Pritchett, p. 153.)
