Summary
Rehearsals for the Dance in America program The spellbound child, first telecast on May 25, 1981. In the first rehearsal, choreographer George Balanchine, assisted by Rosemary Dunleavy, works on segments from the second scene, set in a garden with a cast of dragonflies, moths, bats, frogs, and an owl. Balanchine works intensively on an encounter between a dragonfly (danced by Florence Fitzgerald) and the child of the title role (Christopher Byars). Some sections are recorded with a wide angle lens, and Balanchine occasionally discusses camera angles with director Emile Ardolino. Kermit Love, the costume designer, is also glimpsed on camera. In the second rehearsal (ca. 25 min.), a group of boys playing toads joins the ensemble. Lincoln Kirstein observes from the sidelines. Balanchine works intensively with Christopher Byars and a male dancer, then with the four women playing the dragonflies. A fish-eye lens is used in some sections.
