Title

Biography
Playwright. Theodore Ward, author of more than 30 plays, best known for his plays, "Big white fog" and "Our lan'," was born in Thibodeaux, Louisiana, 1902, and died in Chicago, Illinois, 1983. Regarded as "the dean of black dramatists" during his day, Theodore Ward contributed to the advancement of black theatre in the United States and was officially named Outstanding Pioneer of Black Theatre in 1975. Ward attended the University of Utah, 1930, where his talents as a writer were discovered; he won the Zona Gale Fellowship for Creative Writing, which enabled him to continue his education at the University of Wisconsin, 1931-1933, where he developed both his writing and acting skills.
Ward traveled around the United States and worked at various odd jobs, including elevator operator and porter. During the 1930s, he returned to Chicago and worked as drama instructor for the Negro Unit of the WPA Federal Theater. In the 1940s he moved to New York City and became one of the founders of the Negro Playwrights Company of Harlem. In the 1950s he moved back to Chicago making it his permanent home. He became the director of the Southside Center of the Performing Arts (also called Ted Ward's Southside Center), where many of his plays were revived, 1967-1974. Later he was playwright-in-residence at the Free Southern Theatre, New Orleans. His awards include: National Theatre Conference fellowship, 1945-1947; Theatre Guild Award, 1947, for the play "Our lan'"; Guggenheim fellowship, 1947-1948, for the play "John Brown"; the DuSable Writers Seminar and Poetry Festival Award for excellence in drama, 1982.
