Summary
  • Cassette 1 (11/19/98): Ms. Mullins discusses her first memories of light, color and performance, her education and the impact of Robert Wilson's piece, The life and times of Sigmund Freud. She recalls the impact of other early Wilson pieces, including Deafman glance, remembers how she began to work and perform with Wilson, and reflects on the role of dance in Wilson's work. Perron and Mullins comment upon pictures of Mullins' performances with Wilson, and Mullins' early work in lighting; they then discuss Wilson's pieces, The $ value of man, and Letter for Victoria. Mullins describes ways in which she learned lighting, her work with Andrew De Groat, and the process of becoming resident lighting designer at Danspace. (60 min.)
  • Cassette 2 (11/19/98, side A only): Mullins discusses why she stayed at Danspace so long, and her work with different choreographers, including Douglas Dunn. She discusses Spectral hoedown, working with lighting designer David Fritz, and working with director Anne Bogart. Mullins reflects on Dancespace's role in the dance world, and then comments on photographs of performances for which she created lighting. Finally, she discusses other pieces of significance to her, and additional work by Douglas Dunn. (40 min.)
  • Cassette 3 (1/6/99): Ms. Mullins remembers several people, experiences and performances at Danspace: Ruby Shang, the theatrical nature of the Danspace performing area, Douglas Dunn's Sky eye, Lisa Kraus' Grand tour, and Art Bridgeman and Myrna Packer's Rapid eye movement. She describes the differences in leadership styles between various administrators at Danspace, and Perron and Mullins discuss other pieces that they both remember. They comment on Alarmel Valli, Peter Cramer, the selection of works for Danspace's 25th anniversary Silver Series, and additional perspectives on Danspace. (approx. 65 min.)
