  • The title page plate as used for vol. 1 is found in three progressive states: 1) with imprint ending " ... Yard, &c." and phrase " ... Engravings, designed from nature, by the Author."; 2) in imprint, " &c." replaced by " & J. Edwards, Pall Mall."; 3) title line changed to " ... Engravings, made from drawings by the Author." The changes were made by burnishing and re-engraving. The earlier states may be found only in large-paper copies, in addition to the latest state (i.e. latest state is not characteristic of ordinary-paper copies alone); all copies of vol. 2 have the latest state, with a second "I" added to the volume number.
