- Lawrence Gilman was a self-taught and successful arts writer, working as a music critic for Harper's Weekly (1901-1913), music, drama, and literary critic for the North American Review (1915-1923), and music critic of the New York Herald Tribune from 1923 until his death in 1939. His writings were compiled in 1904 in a volume called "Phases of modern music".
