  • While perhaps planned by Gutenberg and started during his partnership with Fust, the printing was probably completed, if not done its entirety, by Fust and Schöffer. Cf. Wroth, L.C., ed. A history of the printed book. New York, 1938. p. 49-52, and Pollard, A.W. Gutenberg, Fust, Schoeffer, and the invention of printing. (In: The Library. N.S., v. 2, p. 69-99. 1901).
  • Incunabula short title catalogue gives imprint as: [Mainz : Printer of the 42-line Bible (Johann Gutenberg) and Johannes Fust, about 1455].
  • After printing had been begun the type body was changed to permit the printing of 42 instead of 40 lines to a column, and the printing of the incipits in red was abandoned. When an increase in the size of the edition necessitated another printing of the sections already completed, a new setting of type was required. For discussion and tabulation of variants, cf. Johannes Gutenbergs zweiundvierzigzeilige Bibel: Ergänzungsband zur Faksimile-Ausgabe, herausgegeben von Paul Schwenke. Leipzig, Insel-Verlag, 1923 (supplement to facsimile edition: Bible. Latin. Vulgate. 1454. [Biblia. Mainz, Johann Gutenberg? 1455?], reprinted: Leipzig, Insel-Verlag, 1913-1914).
  • In this copy leaves 1-4 (in facsimile), 34, 129-138, 149-158, 261 and 346 are of the first setting of type, leaves 5-32a, 139-148, 325-340a and 486a are of the second.
  • Leaves 325-643 are often described as v. 2, leaves 1-319, and are so numbered in modern ms. in this copy.
