Biography (note)
  • In December 1915, Vernon Castle left the road tour of Irving Berlin's musical Watch your step to study aviation, in preparation to join England's Royal Flying Corps and fight in World War I. After training in England, he was sent to France where he flew many missions during 1916 and 1917, and was awarded the Croix de guerre. He was assigned to instruct pilots at the Royal Flying Corps winter quarters near Fort Worth, Texas. Flying with a student, he took a difficult turn to avoid hitting another training plane which had risen in front of them. His plane crashed with the student unhurt but Castle dead.
