Summary
Letter of Dec. 25, 1904: Griffes describes Christmas in Berlin, his friends and fellow residents at his pension, the gifts he received and sent to his family in Elmira, N.Y., and copying out his Sonato for piano as gifts for friends. Letter of July 17, 1905: Griffes writes about possibly trying to see and audition for the pianist/composer Conrad Ansorge, a recent bout of successful practice on the piano and playing for his friends Emil Joël and Frau Joël, and traveling in Berlin.

  • Between 1903 and 1907, Charles Griffes studied music in Berlin, Germany. He was a student at the Stern Conservatory from 1903-1905 and studied composition with Engelbert Humperdinck and piano with Gottfried Galston, 1905-1906. His Sonata in F Minor for piano was written in 1904. In 1907 he returned to the United States to become the Director of Music at the Hackley School, Tarrytown, N.Y.
